Sodalite is a rich royal blue tectosilicate mineral widely enjoyed as an ornamental gemstone. Although massive sodalite samples are opaque, crystals are usually transparent to translucent. Discovered in 1811 in the Ilimaussaq intrusive complex in Greenland, sodalite did not become important as an ornamental stone until 1891 when vast deposits of fine material were discovered in Ontario, Canada. Sodalite can be grey, yellow, orange or pink. However, for gemstone use, sodalite is typically a deep blue colour, similar to the colour of lapis lazuli, and often has white veins or patches running through it. Opaque sodalite tends to be cut en cabochon. It can be cut into ovals, baguettes, rounds or fancy shapes. Transparent material is faceted, and is quite rare.
