Gem-quality Ammolite produces a spectacular display of iridescent color when it is observed in reflected light. The colors of an individual stone can run the full range of the visible spectrum or be limited to just one or two colors. The color display can rival fine opal and Labradorite in its intensity and beauty. Ammolite is a name given to a thin iridescent aragonite shell material that is found on two species of extinct ammonite fossils, Placenticeras meeki and Placenticeras intercalare.Significant deposits of gem-quality Ammolite are only found in the Bearpaw Formation that extends from Alberta to Saskatchewan in Canada and south to Montana in the USA. However, small deposits have been found as far south as Central Utah which also contains gem-quality Ammolite. The best grade of gem quality Ammolite is along high energy river systems on the eastern slopes of the Rockies in southern Alberta.Ammolite often has a flaky or “dragon skin” surface. To an extent, this is normal, but excessive scaling will reduce Ammolite’s value. Almost all Ammolite gemstones are assembled through a ‘layering’ enhancement. Layering is common in the gem trade and it is most often seen with precious opal in the form of doublets or triplets. Layering treatments enhance durability and in most cases, can also enhance color.
